At the Thai Responsible Tourism Association (TRTA), our mission has always been to inspire, promote, and uphold the values of responsible tourism. Today, we are proud to share a significant milestone in our journey: the development of the Responsible Travel Criteria—a comprehensive framework designed to elevate the standards of sustainable and ethical travel in Thailand.

This achievement is the result of an extraordinary collaboration among our diverse and dedicated members. Our team brings together tourism professionals with over 15 years of hands-on industry experience and esteemed academics who have spent years researching and shaping sustainable tourism practices. Together, this synergy of knowledge and expertise has enabled us to craft a set of criteria that not only reflects the realities of the tourism sector but also embodies the principles of environmental preservation, cultural respect, and community engagement.

Two Types of Thai Responsible Tourism Criteria

Our Responsible Travel Criteria has been carefully tailored to address the distinct needs of two key pillars of the tourism industry:

2. For Community-Based Tourism (CBT):

Focused on empowering local communities to create meaningful and sustainable travel experiences while preserving their unique cultural identity.

Criterias

Each type of criteria comprises the following five essential sections:

1. Responsible Travel Policy:

Establishing clear guidelines and principles for ethical and sustainable practices.

2. Products, Services, Partners, and Customers:

Ensuring that offerings and collaborations align with responsible tourism principles.

3. Social Benefits:

Prioritizing community welfare, cultural preservation, and inclusivity.

4. Economic Benefits:

Fostering economic opportunities that support local development and livelihoods.

5. Environmental Benefits:

Minimizing environmental impacts and promoting conservation efforts.

What Does the Responsible Travel Criteria Mean for Thailand?

The Responsible Travel Criteria is more than just a guideline; it is a commitment to reshaping how we approach travel and tourism. These criteria serve as a roadmap for businesses, travelers, and local communities to foster positive impacts while addressing the challenges of over-tourism, environmental degradation, and social inequities.

A Unified Effort, A Shared Vision

The journey to develop these criteria has been as meaningful as the outcome itself. It exemplifies what we stand for at TRTA: collaboration, responsibility, and innovation. Our members' passion and dedication to creating a sustainable future for Thailand's tourism industry have been nothing short of inspiring.

We invite you to learn more about our Responsible Travel Criteria and to join us in embracing a new era of travel. Together, let's ensure that Thailand remains not only a beloved destination but also a shining example of sustainable and responsible tourism for the world.
